Dave Barry

Dave Barry is a divisive writer.  He writes what he thinks and isn’t bashful about writing what his opinions are.  He is very good at keeping people entertained in his writings and uses his unique writings skills to not bore his readers to bereavement.  Dave Barry is also a colossal soccer fan and writes about soccer frequently. In one of his posts, posted in 2010, titled, “On soccer’s big stage, nudity is the goooall!”, he talks about how exciting the World Cup is.  He writes, “Talk about a party. I’ve seen the Olympics, World Series and Super Bowl. Compared to the World Cup, these events are a meeting of the Des Moines Rotary Club. The World Cup causes entire nations to go insane. Scotland, for example. Scotland qualified for the 1998 World Cup, and although the Scottish team was not favored to win, the Scottish fans blew away all other nations in the competition for the title of Most Alcohol Consumed by Men Wearing Traditional Highland Costumes and No Underpants.”

Do you agree with Dave Barry? Is the World Cup the most exhilarating sporting event? Should the World Cup be more often? Or should the Scotland fans be more tranquil next time?

Our columnists would not get along very well. The World Cup is a very special event that brings the entire world together. Not only are the games amazing to watch, but it brings a variety of cultures together, something a regular sporting event can’t do. Every 4 years is good for the World Cup because the it is not a cheap event to host and it can hurt countries financially.

I completely agree with Barry. The World Cup is by far the most exhilarating sporting event not only because it includes nations from all around the world, but also due to the extreme popularity in the sport and the four year build up of the event. I don’t believe that the World Cup should be more often. I feel that that would decrease the intensity of the event. Also, maybe the Scotland fans should tone it down a bit, or at least put on a pair of underpants.

I disagree with the fact that it is the most exhilarating sporting event. The olympics-both winter and summer- have way more sporting events where they can catch other peoples interests, not just soccer fans. However I think the world cup is a special event where if we had it more often, it wouldn’t be the same. People get pumped for it and even shed tears, waste money, and spend hours watching it. Although I’m sure the revenue it brings in is amazing for the cities hosting it, it’s also very expensive and is just good as it is.

Dave Berry, in my opinion is very right on the World Cup being one of the most exhilarating sporting events. It’s something that happens every four years and the World is involved. All the Nations come together in unison and cheer one another on even if their team has be disqualified. I don’t believe that it should be more often only because it would ruin the intensity and the importance of the World cup. Now as for Scotland, they have been pointed out to “over celebrate” if you will, because they drink and refuse to wear underpants, but also they are not the only country who does this. Either way the Scott’s should be more peaceful during and event so big because it creates a type of animosity towards the country and its people.

This is an interesting piece about Dave Barry, Logan. He seems like a good writer, however, he seems to show bias in his writings about soccer. Being a fan of a sport and writing about it opposed to others is not smart, as you will generally favor the sport you enjoy. Additionally, I disagree with Barry about the World Cup. I think that the “Big 4” of USA sports generates more buzz than the World Cup. March Madness, the Stanley Cup, the World Series, and Super Bowl Sunday are some of the best days of the year for me as a major sports fan and I can’t say that I watched more than five minutes of the World Cup. This may be because I am not a diehard soccer fan, unlike others, but I still had no interest- even in the USA game. I think that soccer is a more international sport and there isn’t a real love for it in America, yet. One day it may excel as a major US sport, but not today. Thanks for sharing, Logan!

I agree with Dave Barry that the World Cup the most exhilarating sporting event with the Olympics close behind. The world cup has happened every 4 years since 1930 and soccer is by far the biggest sport in the world and the most people follow it around the world almost every country has their own national team and most have their own league in there country. The Olympics are close behind though they have been going on since the Greeks and they do have several sports so there is something for everyone. I disagree with what Jonny says though because even though I like basketball far more than soccer hardly anyone outside the US watches March Madness and probably only half of the US actually cares about march madness. During the world cup in most countries if your team loses no matter how far you were projected to go the entire country is disappointed.

I agree with Dave Barry and his idea that the World Cup is the most exhilarating sporing event. I don’t believe that it should be more often though. Part of the excitement is that it is so infrequent that people don’t want to miss any of it. It also allows for the different club leagues to have focus as well. With soccer being the most popular sport in the world it seems that it should be the most exhilarating sporting event. Finally, I believe that the Scottish fans were having a great time so they can keep it up.

I believe that Dave Barry is partially correct. I would say that the World Cup and the Olympics (particularly the Summer ones) should share the title of most exhilarating sporting event. Both events involve countries from all over the world, so a sense of national pride is at stake. With the World Cup, there is only one winner, but some countries are just happy to make it to the tournament. With the Olympics, there are a lot of events, meaning there are many chances for your country to win medals. This is appealing as well. I agree with Chris that the World Cup shouldn’t be more often. It takes away from the experience. The four years in between build up excitement. And Scotland fans should be allowed to go crazy seeing as they don’t make the World Cup that often.

Dave Barry’s statement that the World Cup is the most exhilarating sports event is certainly accurate if he is assessing the sport’s fans. There aren’t many sports that engage fans from all around globe, all at once. The Olympics, while containing a greater variety of sports, doesn’t have as many avid fans. Fans of the Olympics tend to prefer certain sports over others, and its often difficult to find a community of competitive Olympics fans when their interests are so scattered.
The World Cup is much more proficient at bringing fans together- and they tend to come together considerably more strongly.

I do agree that the World Cup is the most exhilarating sports event. So many nations come together to compete in this world cherished sport. The World Cup isn’t like the Olympics where there are more than one sport being competed in, so I believe that the entire world coming together for one sport is fantastic. I don’t think that it should be more often because the anticipation is one of the best parts. Personally, the Scottish fans should be able to do what they would like since this event is so grand.

I agree with Dave when he says that the World Cup is the most exhilarating sporting event possible. Even if you are not a big soccer fan you usually watch some of the world cup, even if it is only the final. The whole world goes crazy when the world cup is on. Entire cities will have parties and parades when they win, and riots when they lose. The U.S. isn’t yet on this level concerning soccer, but soccer is a relatively underdeveloped sport in the United States.
